Beethoven Centennial Edition

In 1927, the Beethoven Centennial (100 years after the composer’s death in 1827) was celebrated by Columbia with new recordings of many of his major works released on Columbia Masterworks. Some were deleted within the decade, as newer recordings of the works in question became available, but others (primarily the string quartets) lasted in the catalogue much longer. In 1928, a similar centenary celebration honored Schubert.
