The roots of the company were established by the brothers Charles & Emile Pathé in 1897 as Compagnie Générale Des Cinématographes, Phonographes et Pellicules. with the head office at boulevard des Italiens in Paris and a factory constructed at Chatou (as of 1936 known as ). Subsequently the name of the company was changed to Compagnie Générale Des Phonographes, Cinématographes et Appareils de Précision, then to Compagnie Générale des Etablissements Pathé Frères, Phonographes et Cinematographes. In 1899 Compagnie Française De Gramophone () was established by the in France with its head office in Boulevard Haussmann in Paris with a factory first in Ivry and then at Nogent-Sur-Marne. In 1919 the brothers Pathé established a new company Compagnie Générale des Machines Parlantes Pathé Frères which took over all of their phonographic activities including the factory at Chatou. In 1928 acquired Compagnie Générale des Machines Parlantes Pathé Frères, the following year Compagnie Générale des Machines Parlantes Pathé Frères acquired the Marconiphone Company Ltd. established by physicist Guglielmo Marconi.
